The move to Las Vegas allows ASCRS to have its first meeting in 800+ days in as safe a meeting venue as can be reasonably organized. Will the pandemic push ISBCS acceptance? In light of the pandemic’s push to limit exposure in various medical settings, some ophthalmologists have been considering immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) with renewed interest to help get through a backlog of cases efficiently and to ease patient anxiety about coming in for surgical procedures. Using AK/LRIs to correct astigmatism Astigmatic keratotomy (AK) and limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) are tools that can be used by surgeons to help correct low levels of astigmatism. Two surgeons discussed how these can reduce astigmatism and how they’re using them in practice. Keratoconus screening in the U.S. Screening and early diagnosis is very important for keratoconus patients. Two physicians discussed when to screen, what tests they use, and treatment options. Options to reduce postop cataract surgery drops for glaucoma patients Newer steroid and NSAID options (and some off-label administration of antibiotics) that are delivered either via injection or intracanalicular insert can help avoid complicating a patient’s drop regimen that is already subject to non-compliance, instillation issues, potential for ocular surface agitation, and more. Facility development in the peri-COVID era This may not be the year that COVID-19 “goes away” but rather the year that we use what’s been learned to dig in for the next phase of a longer fight than was ever expected. But even in this still hunkering-down year, practices have to continue to pursue their development plans.
